Global Warming: Its Damaging Affects on Polar Bears

Imagine falling asleep on a comfortable bed of ice and awakening to the tickling of water at your toes. Imagine the expansion of the rainforest being halted as new breeds of animals begin moving into your neighborhood because they have nowhere else to go. What do you do when you can no longer fly south for the winter because the O-zone is hindering flight? What do you plan to eat when your special supply of food is no longer available? These questions are no longer unanswered with the onset of global warming and its affect on the animal kingdom—especially the polar bears. According to Steven Amstrup, a polar bear specialist in Anchorage, Alaska, global warming is rapidly melting the ice in the Northern regions and slowly killing the polar bears as they struggle to survive. In any event, if we don’t save the polar bears, their hunting season will grow shorter and their constant struggle for survival will eventually lead to death.

Melting Ice

Polar Bears on Thin Ice

The Bush Administration has proposed to list polar bears as endangered species. The effects of Global Warming on polar bears are becoming more evident as time goes by. Not only are birth and survival rates decreasing but polar bears are actually drowning while searching for food and the safety of their ice sheets. (NDRC)

Please visit the Natural Resources Defense Council for more information on how Global Warming is killing polar bears and how you can get the Bush Administration to finalize the listing of polar bears as endangered and to designate its critical habitat.

Trivia

Did You Know?

* About 30 new infectious diseases have emerged in the past 20 years due to Global Warming?

* By the year 2050, up to one million additional deaths from malaria may be occurring annually as a result of climate change!

* There is scientific consensus that air pollution from human activities is partly responsible for Global Warming.

Silent Screams

Banned Nature Documentary.

The Finnish Broadcasting Company and French television channel, Arte, sent a crew to research seals which also included Global Warming as one of the things to be explored.  The project was quickly halted when the commission editors thought that the content wasn't suitable to family audiences due to its shocking nature.
